Recurrent ear infections that occur multiple times in one year are from Eustachian tube dysfunction in children. Children in daycare are more likely to have recurrent ear infections. Children with repeated infections are also more likely to have fluid behind the eardrum that causes hearing loss and possible speech delay. A minimally invasive procedure to insert PE tubes in the eardrums can bypass the Eustachian tube dysfunction and resolve recurrent ear infections. Recurrent sore throats in children can be a sign of chronic tonsillitis.
Fever and throat pain can lead to frequent school absences. Enlarged tonsils can also cause snoring and apnea in children. This can lead to disrupted sleep and behavioral problems in the daytime hours. Tonsillectomy can remove the site of recurrent infection or obstruction to eliminate recurrent tonsil infections or apnea.
